Shock and emotion following the Trappes attack

October 26, 2026

A racist attack in Trappes and La Verrière resulted in one death and five injuries, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for unity.

On Friday, October 23, 2026, a man driving a car opened fire on pedestrians in Trappes and La Verrière, in the Yvelines department. According to the anti-terrorism prosecutor, the attacker deliberately targeted individuals of African or Maghrebi origin. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh noted that the attack occurred during Friday prayers, when the local mosque was hosting approximately 3 000 worshippers, and stated that the suspect's arrest by BAC officers likely prevented a larger tragedy.

The attack left one 26-year-old man dead and five others injured, including a 12-year-old girl who remains in critical condition. The attacker admitted to acting to avenge events from the October 17 protests. President Emmanuel Macron visited Trappes to condemn the act, describing it as motivated by racist ideology. The Association of French Mayors (AMF) has called on mayors to organize gatherings in front of town halls next Friday at 6:00 PM.
