History

Seoul has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, with permanent settlements forming around 8000–7000 BCE. It served as the capital of Baekje from 18 B.C. until 475 A.D., when it was captured by Goguryeo, and later came under Silla control in 553. In 1394, the Joseon dynasty designated Hanyang as its capital, a role the city has maintained under various names ever since. On September 18, 1946, the U.S. military government designated Seoul a special city, and on July 4, 1949, the Local Autonomy Act established it as a special metropolitan city with status equal to that of a province.
